The next trend in this series looks at the reemergence of 1970s fashion. From accessories to hemlines to hairstyles, this season's runways are full of 70s inspired trends. There is something both wonderfully tacky and beautifully chic about 1970s fashions. I love both the rocker-cowboy-prairie look and the disco diva drama.; and both these looks are very prominent this season with designers. Don't love polyester however but luckily, this is not one of the trends that is rockin the runways. The designers have been more kind then that.
I am really really loving the 70s inspired dresses. The hemlines are distinctly 70s ranging from the Maxi to the mini. The necklines are also very 70s. There are some ranging from long-sleeves to strapless. The dresses I chose below are a great example of the variety of the 70s inspired looks this season. You will find a more disco diva look in the Badgley Mischka Greecian inspired Maxi dress. She has the big hair and sparkly gold jewelery to bring the outfit together. There are some more prairie-country inspired dresses such as the Anna Sui - rockin the feather accessories - and a little more cowboy chic with the Roberto Cavalli pink tassel dress (I just adore that dress). There are also more rocker inspired looks like the blue Pucci paisley maxi with the very low front and long flowy back. There are so many varieties of this inspired look in dresses. See below for all kinds of examples.

How to get the look:
With any trend, it is probably best to rock different aspects of the look and incorporate it into your wardrobe rather than replacing everything with 70s inspired items. With that in mind, to get this look, there are a few things you can do.
1. Start with accessories: Gold, feather accents, tassels.
2. Get a great shoe: Platforms of all kinds are totally a must for this look. Also, many designers put their models in boots. Mid calf to above the knee were the most popular - including pull-ons and lace-ups.
3. Get the 70s hair. Big, big hair is a must. Make sure to part your hair in the center. If you have very straight hair, part it in the middle. This look is distinctly 70s and will still work. Also, your could consider wearing a headband or bandana - one that goes around your head rather than pulling your hair back.
4. Get a dress (or two or three): Get a 70s inspired dress whether it is a mini or maxi. Also, if you want to really 70s it up, choose a 70s graphic like a paisley (see blue Pucci mini) or a mishmash of patterns ( see Anna Sui dresses). Also lace, tassels and bright bright colours are a good way to go.
5. Buy a wide-leg pant: A wide-leg jean or pant will totally bring the 70s to your wardrobe. They can be worn with a variety of different tops. Also, it is important to wear high heels underneath so they look feminine and also fall naturally. If you are really digging the 70s look, buy a pant romper (one-piece pant and top combo - see Marc Jacobs below). The most flattering ones are the ones that cinch at your natural waist (Donna Karen). See below for some pant and romper options.
The best advice is to have fun with and be comfortable with whatever you choose to incorporate. Play up the drama and the campy-ness of the period!

Ok kiddies, what do you think of this 1970s flashback? Are you also happy designers have shied away from polyester? Do you love the big hair, platforms and high drama of the look?

I have to say I love the Cavalli stuff. It's kind of feminine and gracefully flowy while still having an edginess to it with the fringe.
ReplyDeletePersonally I can't imagine ever pulling off any of these looks though. I'm not sure what it is - maybe the drama is just too intimidating! But fascinating to look at all the ranges of styles that have come out and definitely interesting with that 70s feel.
I have to close with one comment on that Pucci Spring 2011 dress - with the stretchy fabric, interesting graphic, its placement, and the colour to top it all off... well, it's reminding me distinctly of a body part after which various Monologues have been written. I'll leave it at that! LOL
About the Pucci dress, you are so right! It totally does haha
ReplyDeleteAlso, Heather, you would soooo be able to pull off most of these looks!
For example, a maxi dress would look amazeballs on you! Also, wideleg pants were made for you! You are so lovely and tall!
